LEONORA DESTE, GESVALDO PRINCIPESSA DI VENOSA. L'ANTICA et fedele seruitù mia con l'eccellenza del Signor Don CARLO GESVALDO Principe di Venosa consorte di V. E. come fu di tanta efficacia, che mi fece degno mentre ella visse della communicanza delli suoi perfetti, et esquisiti componimenti, cosi hora richiede che ritrouandomi alcuni di essi frà le mani, et sentendo auicinarmi al fine degli anni miei, li dia alle stampe, sapendo bene che se per auuentura (come pure potrebbe di leggiero auuenire) da altri che da me fusse fatto questo vfficio, comparirebbono.[=,] non senza gran danno della stima douuta ad vn così raro ingegno, mancheuoli della loro natia bellezza; non essendo stata quella Eccellenza solita di confidare con altri che meco l'esatto giudicio, ch'ella facea intorno alle sue cose di Musica. Et perche quella osseruanza di leal Seruitore viue hora più che mai nell'animo mio, et l'affetto che fin da quel tempo mi è stato vn continuo sprone alla seruitù et ricordeuole osseruanwa verso l'eccellenza V. si è con questa occasione oltramodo auanzato; vengo spinto a dedicarli questi madrigali, quali proprij suoi stimar deue, come quella tanto amata già dal suo caro Consorte che parea lo spirito di lui viuesse nel petto di V. E. Riconoscali dunque come tali, et se godendo tal'hora della loro armonia sospirasse alla memoria di quei felici tempi, compatisca me rimasto priuo d'vn tal Signore, et lontano dall'E. V. alla quale per fine fo humilmente riuerenza Da Napoli li 15 di Luglio 1626. Di V. E. Humelissimo Seruitore Mutio Effrem.

VEDENDO io di quanta amiratione sia l'opera di Vostra Eccellen. Illustriss. al mondo, data in luce sotto il nome di Gioseppe Pilonij, et essendo la Stampa (come suole) in alcuni errori trascorsa, io per l'ardente desiderio ed obligo che tengo di seruirla come deuotiss. seruitore, che le sono, ho preso cura di riuederla minutamente, et con diligenza corretta, di nuouo ristamparla nella medesima stampa, nella quale pur hora ho stampato il secondo libro de' suoi diuini madrigali. NON è cosa nuoua che i parti d’ingegno escano alla publica luce, sotto l’ombra fauoreuole di persona ingegnosa. Et io nel mandar’ alle stampe questi componimenti musicali di Pomponio Nenna, huomo con cui par’ rinascesse, e si perfettionasse la musica; et di alcuni altri virtuosi per meglio compir’ l’opra aggiunti nel fine; hò pensato non trauiar’ dal vecchio costume, dal quale non mi ritira punto la querela comune, che gran’ penuria si troui di huomini virtuosi, et che se bene la virtù fù sempre di pochi, hora però pochi sieno della virtù, e doue prima da molti, seguita, da molti ella, quasi sdegnosa fuggiua, hora sia fuggita scambieuolmente da molti, da pochi cercata, et ottenuta. Ma sieno giuste, ò men’ giuste le querele, nol’ giudico; à mè sol’ basta haver’ voi, Sig. mio, che sete non meno per opinione, che per esperienza di tutti, fedelissimo seguace della virtù, et amorevole de virtuosi in seno del quale inuio questo tenero parto, che esce di nuouo alla vita. Nè dubito punto, che per l’innata cortesia vostra, e per la cognitione, che hauete di questa nobilissima scienza non siate per aggradir’ il dono, che son’ per far’ al Mondo; Grande egli inuero in se stesso; mà tant’ hora maggiore, quanto maggior’ è il prezzo ch’ ei prende dal nome vostro. Fù sottoposta vn’ pezzo quest’opra à quel’ disastro comune de gl’ huomini in qual’siuoglia scienza segnalati, che per lo più, quanto son’ fauoriti dalla natura, tanto son’ perseguitati dal caso, e doue maggior’ ingegno risplende, quiui suole minor’ fortuna trouarsi; Onde giaceuasi in tenebre tanto contenta e satisfatta di quelle, che non pensaua più d’vscir’ alla luce, anzi pareua gli fusse tolto il modo di poter’ vscirci; Mà io per non priuar, et il mondo di tanto diletto, e si grand’ huomo della douuta gloria, già che con lui rinacque la musica, giudicai non esser douere, che con lui morisse; E quest’è la cagione che m’hà mosso à raccorla insieme à risarcirla da i patiti danni, e con aiuto, e consiglio d’huomini della professione, ad aggiungerui anco vna parte, che per essersi à gran tempo smarrita dall’altre leuaua del tutto la speranza di poter’ mai del restante godersi. Nel che ho stimato cosa giusta e ragioneuole, con qualche nota d’audacia, comprar’ la volontà di tanti, che bramano veder’ quest’opra finalmente in luce. Mà quando mai altro non conseguissero le mie fatiche, assai è l’h[a]uer’ potuto compiacere e seruir’ à voi al quale deuo per tanti titoli impressimi altamente nel cuore, quante note son’ in quest’opra scolpite. E non è poca ventura ch’ io possa darui segno della seruitù mia, con questi concenti, dalla suauità de i quali sò che sarà quella addolcita in modo che non sia del tutto indegna di voi. Illustriss. tengono prin / cipal luogo tre Ricercari composte da lei, le quali, pre- / supposto la sua licenza, mando con altre mie alla stam- / pa; non già perche io non sia certo, ch'ella non desidera / laude da cose simili, con tutto che in esse apparisca l'ec- / cellenza del suo ingegno: et perche conosco che alle compagne ne ve- / nirà quella luce, et auell'ornamento, che non hanno potuto riceuere dal- / la mia imperfettione; conosco ancora, che douendo io per la stessa causa, / oltre all'obligo della seruitù, dedicare à V.
